After a very busy spring that saw 18 Broadway shows open in two months, audiences and actors alike could finally take a breather and celebrate.
The Tony Awards were presented in a ceremony hosted by Oscar-winning actress Ariana DeBose for the third consecutive year, with several awards presented during a pre-show on Pluto TV, followed by the main ceremony on CBS and Paramount+.
Many film actors appeared on Broadway this season, which is made up of plays and musicals that opened during the eligibility period from April 28, 2023 to April 25, 2024. Most of the winners were first-time Tony Award nominees, and many of them were making their Broadway debut.
Jeremy Strong won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his role in An Enemy of the People; Daniel Radcliffe won his first Tony Award (in his fifth Broadway show) for his role in Merrily We Roll Along; Sarah Paulson won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her role as the fiery Toni Lafayette in Appropriate; and Carla Young won her first Tony Award for her performance in the comedy revival of Pearly Victorious, making her the first black actor to receive three consecutive Tony nominations.
