The Los Angeles Lakers are facing a pivotal offseason for the team. Their first order of business will be to hire the right head coach, after which they will need to tweak and strengthen their roster in order to become a true championship contender next season.
The Lakers are reportedly prioritizing Davis over LeBron James in their head coaching search, and while plans to shift the team’s weight from James to Davis have been in the works for several years, it appears those plans may soon be accelerating.
While speaking with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson on the Scoop B Radio podcast, former NBA center and current ESPN personality Kendrick Perkins suggested that if Davis doesn’t like LA’s coaching hire, he should consider a move to the New York Knicks.
“All I’m paying attention to is keeping an eye on the Lakers situation. Anthony Davis, John Calipari, William W. Wesley, Kentucky era. I’ve heard rumors, Rich Paul talking to the front office and then settling after not communicating? You never know what’s going to happen in Los Angeles, right? JJ Redick might be the front-runner for the job. I don’t know. If it’s AD, we’ll have to see how it goes.” [expletive] Look at it. You gotta see what it’s like. JJ, are you here to make me look good? Are you here to make me money? If not, I’m jumping the gun, New York is the place. They’ve got the options, they’ve got the assets, and guess what? AD at Beef and Body in Madison Square. [Jalen] Branson, you know what I’m saying? Stop messing around. Stop messing around! You liked it! People don’t care about the AD. I don’t! If you’re an AD, you’re like, “Hold on a second. OK, what are we doing, who are we going to hire? What are we doing here? Who are we here for? Am I here for me?”
The Knicks suddenly have championship caliber after two decades of incompetence, with Brunson taking the Big Apple by storm and a complement of intriguing, productive complementary players in OG Anunoby, Miles McBride, Donte DiVincenzo and former Laker Josh Hart.
The Knicks may not have a true No. 2 star, and if they decide Julius Randle can’t fill that role, they may be looking to make a big move this summer.
However, it seems highly unlikely at this point that the Lakers would consider trading for Davis.
