Besides Fakhar Zaman, Younis Khan will also recommend Naseem Shah as a possible candidate to take over as Pakistan captaincy.
After reaching the final of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, Pakistan has been on a downward trajectory in ICC events. They had mixed results in the 50-over World Cup in India, where they were eliminated without making it to the semi-finals. However, the 2024 T20 World Cup was a disastrous one for Pakistan, as they not only lost to the USA in the group stage, but also missed out on qualifying for the Super Eight.
The team’s performance has once again raised doubts about Babar Azam’s captaincy. Former Pakistan cricketer Younis Khan suggested on a PTV Sports game show that Fakhar Zaman could be made captain of the team. “Why can’t Fakhar Zaman be captain of the team? Isn’t he a performer?” Younis questioned.

Didn’t he perform well in the last 50-over World Cup? Who is the player who gave us hope? Zaman was in poor form in the 2023 India World Cup but picked up his form in the second half and coincided with Pakistan’s success. His blistering start at the top of the order put Pakistan in the running to win the title but it was too late to go further in the tournament.
The left-hander has been dropped down the batting order by the management on multiple occasions in the T20I format despite being a talented opener. He was batting at number four in the ongoing T20 World Cup. “Who is the player in the team who will leave the opener slot and bat at number four, five or six? Who is sacrificing his position? It’s Fakhar Zaman! Why not make him captain,” Younis added.
However, the change in batting order has not worked out well for Zaman, who could only score 33 runs in four matches at an average of 8.25 and a strike rate of 110. In addition to Zaman, Younis would also recommend Naseem Shah as captain and compare him to South Africa’s Graeme Smith, who took charge at a young age and went on to have a stellar career both as a leader and a player.
