What happened in House of the Dragon Season 1?

Like its predecessor, Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is based on the novel Fire and Blood by George R. R. Martin.
The series is set 200 years before the events of the hit series Game of Thrones and will centre on the plight of House Targaryen as they rise to the throne under King Viserys I Targaryen.
The prequel begins by exploring the accession to the throne and reign of King Viserys, ancestor of Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen, and the conflict he caused by declaring his daughter, Rhaenyra, heir to the Iron Throne, breaking with the tradition of males only.
The first season finale saw Aemond Targaryen (son of King Viserys and Alicent Hightower) murder Lutharis Velaryon (son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen), starting the Dance of Dragons, a civil war that would tear the kingdom in two. This all-out war was fought between the Green faction (led by Alicent and King Aegon II) and the Black faction (led by Rhaenyra and Daemon), and also involved other prominent houses such as House Stark, House Lannister, and House Baratheon.
