After Babar Azam’s Pakistan cricket team failed to qualify for the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which is being played in the US and West Indies, former Indian player Virender Sehwag slammed the team’s captain for his poor performance.
In the group stage matches, Pakistan could only beat Canada and Ireland, while Babar’s team lost to India and the USA. They finished third with four points after four group stage matches.

Looking at the statistics, Babar’s performance in the group stage was not great as he managed to score just 122 runs at a strike rate of just 101.66.
Sehwag came down heavily on Babar, pointing out that the Pakistan captain does not meet the requirements of the modern T20 game and was also of the opinion that if the Pakistan Cricket Board takes action against Babar and removes him from the white-ball captaincy, he should not be considered for the Pakistan T20I team.

“But as a leader, you have to think if this match is beneficial for the team. If it is not beneficial, then you should drop yourself and send in someone who can play big shots in the sixth over and bring in 50-60 runs for the team. It may sound harsh but if the captaincy is changed, Babar will not suit the T20 team. His performances are not up to the demands of today’s T20 cricket.” Crickbaz He quoted Sehwag as saying.

After Pakistan’s win against Ireland, Babar didn’t just defend the criticism of his position as captain.
“When I gave up the captaincy [in 2023]”I thought it shouldn’t be done now so I quit and announced it myself,” Babar said. “Then when they gave it back to me, it was the PCB’s decision. When I return, we will discuss everything that has happened here. And if I have to quit the captaincy, I will announce it publicly. I will not hide anything. Whatever happens, happens publicly. But as of now, I am not thinking about it. It is ultimately the PCB’s decision,” Sehwag added.
