NEW DELHI: Pakistan coach Gary Kirsten has stunned the cricketing world with some shocking revelations about the team, saying there is a “lack of cohesion” within the team and that he has “never seen anything like it” in his long career as a coach.
Former India star spinner Harbhajan Singh has urged Kirsten to return to coach India rather than wasting his time as Pakistan coach following his team expose.
“Gary, don’t waste your time there. Come back as coach of the Indian team. Gary Kirsten is one of a kind. A great coach, mentor, a man of integrity and a dear friend to the entire 2011 team. 2011 World Cup winning coach. A special person, Gary @Gary_Kirsten,” Harbhajan posted on X.
Kirsten’s criticism comes in the wake of Pakistan’s early exit from the T20 World Cup, currently being held in the United States and West Indies.
Last year’s runners-up, Pakistan had their worst performance in recent years, finishing with a win over Ireland but then suffering a surprising defeat to newcomers USA and then losing to traditional rivals India.
According to Pakistani media reports, Kirsten, who led India to victory in the ODI World Cup in 2011, did not hold back on his assessment of the team even after they were eliminated from the tournament.
“There is no unity in the Pakistan team. They call it a team but they are not a team. They do not support each other. Everyone is divided left and right. I have worked in many teams and I have never seen anything like this,” Kirsten said in the report, quoting a senior journalist.
