Luke Williams says Swansea City are making a global push to recruit new players in order to compete with the “big teams” in the Championship.

Williams said Swansea’s summer target list included few established second-tier players because of the high wages and transfer fees they would require.

Instead, the Welsh club are looking elsewhere in the English market and, buoyed by the success of January signing Ronald, are looking at players from around the world.

“We’re obviously focused on the UK market, but also looking at Europe and potentially the global market,” Williams said.

“We have some great players. [out there] A player who would fit perfectly into our team and tick all the boxes, and we will try to find such a player.

“There aren’t many players with a proven track record in the Championship. [on our list] “There are big sharks circling in that tank. It’s totally fine.”

The 23-year-old Ronaldo became the first Brazilian to play for Swansea after joining from Gremio Annapolis for a seven-figure fee, scoring three goals in his first 18 Championship games.

Prior to his move to Wales, the winger was on loan to Portuguese club Estrela da Amadora for 18 months.

Swansea were also targeting another player on the overseas market, Excelsior’s Koueib Driewec, and secured Ronald’s deal.

Williams said Ronald’s move was a “great acquisition” given his ability, age and potential resale value.

“We have some exciting, hungry players with real Championship quality so we’re not looking to make any changes,” he said.

“He will also make a great contribution to the club whilst he is here and will likely contribute to the development of the club and its players when he leaves. You couldn’t ask for a better deal.”
