Fashion shows always feature beautiful faces and bodies, and this one, titled “Nature’s Canvas”, is no exception. The show, which is being held to mark World Vitiligo Day on June 21 at the PYC Deccan Gymkhana, Bhandarkar Road, will feature 23 models suffering from vitiligo, a condition that causes loss of skin pigmentation.

Famous people with vitiligo include Vogue model Winnie Harlow and Chandrababu Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party. “People whose disfigurement is caused by vitiligo cannot get into acting, fronting or other jobs where appearance matters. It takes a lot of courage to face society with that kind of appearance,” says Dr Maya Tulpur, a general surgeon who has been working to reintegrate vitiligo patients into mainstream society for over two decades.

“People with vitiligo don’t want to go to birthdays or weddings due to the stigma. They are afraid to go to social events, public places and new environments. It is the society’s mindset that stands in their way. The fashion show is a way to spread awareness about vitiligo and encourage society – the majority who do not have the disease – to see things in a different way,” says Turpur, who has suffered from vitiligo since childhood and has experienced the psychological effects of depression and anxiety.

The models in the show are from the community where Tulpur works. Various professionals are involved in the fashion show. Grooming and styling expert Chaitanya Gokhale is the fashion show director and Leena Khandekar is in charge of makeup and hair styling. The participants walk in clothes designed by the Fashion School of Technology, Pune. “Young people are our target audience because they understand that everyone likes to look pretty and attractive,” says Tulpur.
