MADURAI: Former minister and AIADMK leader Selur K Raju has welcomed Vijay’s entry into politics and urged him to join the AIADMK alliance, saying party leaders and workers are not afraid of elections. He also criticised the DMK, alleging that the party is robotically adopting new methods every election.
“The DMK has been distributing funds to woo voters like in the by-elections in Pudukottai where the DMK conducted a ‘Moi Vidhu’ event and in Erode where voters thronged like goats. Amid all this, Congress leader EVKS Elangovan praised the MK Stalin government and compared it with the rule of Congress leader K Kamaraj. Do you think people will accept such comparisons? A similar scenario is prevailing in Vikravandi too, hence we have decided to boycott the by-elections,” he said, adding that the DMK should contest the LS elections on its own if it feels its influence has increased.
Pointing out that even the DMK has boycotted several by-elections in the past, Raju said, “People are agitated whether the DMK’s election promises will be fulfilled or not. We felt that earlier we had opposed the policies of late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and decided to join hands with the BJP. But it will be difficult for the BJP to win as it cannot win people’s hearts by making big promises in its election manifesto alone and religious politics cannot deliver results in Tamil Nadu.”
The party leader also commented on actor Vijay’s entry into politics, saying, “Vijay has offered to help the poor through his earnings from films. He can join the AIADMK coalition. The terms of joining will be decided by party secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami.”
