NEW DELHI: Former Indian cricketer and cricket commentator Aakash Chopra has commented that comments allegedly made by Pakistan coach Gary Kirsten after the team’s exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup have played a role in fuelling the ongoing controversy.

Kirsten, who was recently appointed as the limited-overs head coach, reportedly criticised the team’s lack of cohesion following their poor performance.

“Gary Kirsten reportedly said that the Pakistan team is not united as a team, they are just making fun of each other, cliques are being formed and everyone is splitting up, they are playing together but they are not doing anything like playing together, they are not even putting five fingers together to make a fist. He is said to have said this in the dressing room and this has come to light,” Chopra said in a video shared on his YouTube channel.

Pakistan’s T20 World Cup exit was at the group stage, losing to co-hosts USA and India in Group A. Several former cricketers have said that the Pakistan team seems to be falling apart.

Kirsten has denied making such comments, but Chopra added that anything can get leaked in Pakistan cricket, especially after a bad season.

“Gary Kirsten would have said he never said that but Pakistan cricket is like a strainer. Whatever you put in, it leaks out the other side. Since this is about Pakistan cricket and a bad season, it reminds me that success has many fathers and failure is an orphan. It worked like ghee being set on fire,” the former India opener elaborated.
