This position is usually chosen from the most senior member of the House of Representatives. The election of the Speaker of the House takes place under the supervision of the temporary Speaker. After a general election, the government and opposition parties work together to nominate a candidate for Speaker. The Prime Minister or Minister of Parliamentary Affairs then formally proposes the name of the candidate, which is then unanimously approved.

But this time there may be an election. The opposition parties have threatened to field candidates, which would be a first in the history of independent India.

The election for the Speaker of the Lok Sabha will be held on June 26. The date for the election is announced by the Office of the President of India. However, the selection of the Deputy Speaker is the prerogative of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

If the government does not agree to provide the post of Deputy Speaker, the opposition Indian Union party can choose to field a candidate for Speaker, a post traditionally held by the Leader of the Opposition. However, in previous Houses of Parliament, there has been no such post. The rules do not require the House to have a Deputy Speaker.
