The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday said it has received eight applications from candidates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections seeking verification of the burnt-in memory of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) units, the first time since the Supreme Court order in April allowing verification at the request of the runner-up in any election.

The Election Commission in a statement said it had received three applications from BJP candidates from Ahmednagar (Maharashtra), Vellore (Tamil Nadu) and Zahirabad (Telangana), three from Indian National Congress candidates from Kanker (Chhattisgarh), Faridabad (Haryana) and Karnal (Haryana), one each from Dessia Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) candidate from Virudhunagar (Tamil Nadu) and Yuvajana Shramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) candidate from Vizyanagaram (Andhra Pradesh).

As per the EC’s standard operating procedure, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has informed the EVM manufacturers of the list of applications to be validated.

“The process of verification and validation can begin within four weeks of the CEO receiving confirmation from the registrar of the respective High Court of the status of the election petitions filed in each of the constituencies selected as above. The deadline for filing election petitions (EPs) is 19th July 2024 for the current election cycle, i.e. 45 days from the date of declaration of results. Technical standard operating procedures enumerating the modalities and procedures for verification and validation of burnt out memory/microcontroller of EVM units will be issued by the Commission accordingly before the end of the election petition period,” the EC said.
