PCB may make changes to selection committee after disastrous T20 World Cup defeat

Changes are likely to be made to the seven-member PCB selection committee following Pakistan’s dismal performance in the T20 World Cup. The PCB will conduct an investigation to assess what went wrong for Pakistan, but it is understood that streamlining the selection committee’s operations is the committee’s top priority. ESPNcricinfo understands that the number of selection committee members will be reduced and the PCB is also considering abandoning its short-lived experiment of a selection committee with no formal representative or head.

The current selection committee was announced less than three months ago. Its previous chairman, Wahab Riaz, was stripped of his position but remained on the committee. Each of the seven members has an equal number of votes, and PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said at the time that the committee would “take a majority vote based on discussion and debate to reach a satisfactory conclusion.”

However, Wahab is not expected to regain his position as chairman, even if the position is re-established. ESPNcricinfo understands there is unhappiness within the PCB, including from Wahab himself, over the public perception that Wahab is running the selection committee as a de facto chairman and has faced criticism as a result. It remains highly likely that Wahab will withdraw from the committee altogether, with Naqvi keen to show the public that no one is immune from adverse outcomes.

Meanwhile, a decision on Babar Azam’s captaincy is not expected to be taken anytime soon. Although the situation has become increasingly emotional since Pakistan’s exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup, there is no sense of imminent need for a decision either way given that Pakistan’s next white-ball match is not until November.
The review will include feedback from several senior officials who accompanied the team, particularly head coach Gary Kirsten. Kirsten was appointed after an exhaustive search for a coach in April and is a strong voice at the PCB. After Pakistan’s elimination from the tournament, multiple reports surfaced that Kirsten had expressed disappointment in the team’s lack of cohesion. While the veracity of Kirsten’s remarks is unclear, it appears to have been an open and lively exchange of views, which may shape the tour report to be submitted to the PCB.

If no decision is made public by then, further changes to the domestic set-up could be signalled in the revision of players’ central contracts, which expire on June 30. The PCB and players agreed to three-year contracts in a landmark decision last year but that applies only to the blanket terms of the contract. Individual players can be moved up or down categories or left out completely depending on their performance. There are currently three players in the highest category – Babar, Mohammed Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi.
