Amaravati: The inaugural session of the 16th Andhra Pradesh Assembly began on Friday with 172 newly elected members taking oath of office. According to official sources, the 172 state assembly members were administered oath by interim Speaker and TDP member G. Butchaiah Choudhary.

After the swearing-in ceremony, the Speaker pro tempore adjourned Parliament until 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

According to sources, no election for chairman and vice-chairman was held at the meeting.

However, TDP leader Nara Lokesh, Jana Sena leader Pawan Kalyan and others have declared their candidacy for the Speaker’s post in place of TDP’s Narsipatnam assembly member C Ayanapatrudu.

The rally began at 9.45 am at an assembly hall in Velagapudi, Amravati.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu attended Friday’s meeting after two-and-a-half years.

In 2021, Naidu had vowed not to return to the state Assembly until he was sworn in as Chief Minister, citing objectionable comments made by a section of YSRCP leaders.

Actor, politician and Janasena Party leader Pawan Kalyan made his first foray into Parliament in his 16-year-old political career as MP and Deputy Chief Minister from Pithapuram constituency.

Chief Minister and Kuppam MP Chandrababu Naidu was the first to take oath, followed by Deputy Chief Minister Kalyan and other assembly members.

After taking oath, Naidu went to the chair of the interim speaker and exchanged greetings.

YSRCP supremo YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was also present at the session and took oath as MLA.

The NDA alliance won a landslide victory in the 2024 Andhra Pradesh state assembly elections, winning 164 of the 175 Lok Sabha seats.
