New Delhi: The Election Commission on Friday announced a special outline revision of electoral rolls in the states of Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, to be implemented from July 1. The process will begin on June 25. The exercise is aimed at publishing draft electoral rolls ahead of state assembly elections due later this year.
The Election Commission has directed to update the electoral rolls of Jammu and Kashmir with July 1 as the eligibility date. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar in his last press conference said that the Election Commission will soon commence the process of state assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and noted how keen the people of Jammu and Kashmir are to participate in democracy in the Lok Sabha elections. The last special summary revision of electoral rolls has been done in all states with January 1, 2024 as the eligibility date.
“The Commission firmly believes that a pure, comprehensive and up-to-date electoral roll is the foundation for free, fair and credible elections. To ensure the fidelity of the electoral roll, it will place special emphasis on intensive pre-revision activities before the draft roll is released,” it said in a statement.
The pre-revision activities will mainly include door-to-door surveys by polling station level officials to capture duplicate registrations, deceased voters and voters who have permanently relocated, and correction of electoral rolls. There will also be rationalisation and relocation of polling stations, and improvement of image quality to ensure good quality photographs of voters.
The door-to-door canvassing will take place from June 25 to July 24, with the draft electoral roll to be published on July 25. The CEO has also set aside special campaign days on Saturdays and Sundays, with the final publication of the electoral roll to be made on July 20.
