Junior Achievement USA has awarded Dalton State College its 2022-23 U.S. Presidential Volunteer Service Bronze Award in recognition of more than 1,500 hours of volunteer work, an increase of 500 hours from the previous year.

Mallory Saffrey, associate director of career and professional development and one of several faculty members who have integrated volunteerism into their curriculum, accepted the award on behalf of Dalton State College at the JA Volunteer Summit in Washington, DC, on June 11.

Saffrey, who serves on Northwest Georgia’s Junior Achievement advisory board and helps out as a volunteer liaison, said the award is an honor for Dalton State and highlights the resume-building and networking opportunities the college offers students.

“Through their volunteer work, Roadrunners help local youth while developing leadership, communication and team-building skills to succeed in their future careers,” Saffrey said. “Through their volunteer work with JA, students are able to stay connected to their community and network and make connections with local employers who share their same values. I’m so proud of our students, who are the true MVPs of this award.”

Dalton State students, faculty and staff contributed 2,685 hours of service to the JA Discovery Center of Greater Dalton during the 2022-23 academic year. This marks the second consecutive year that Dalton State has received this award.

“Volunteers play an integral role in delivering Junior Achievement’s learning experiences,” said Jack Kosakowski, president and CEO of Junior Achievement USA. “We are grateful for the role these partners play in pursuing Junior Achievement’s mission of inspiring young people and preparing them for success through the engagement of volunteer mentors. Organizations that present the U.S. President’s Volunteer Awards are responsible for positively impacting the lives of millions of young people, and we are grateful for their commitment to making a positive difference in countless communities across the country.”

The U.S. President’s Volunteer Awards is a presidential recognition program created by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Engagement to recognize individuals and organizations who have dedicated significant time to volunteering.
