Virginia Tech Lincoln advances to Olympic Track and Field Qualifiers

EUGENE, Ore. — Virginia Tech star Judson Lincoln IV advanced to the semifinals in the 400 meters on Friday, the first day of the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials.

Lincoln finished sixth overall in the first round with a time of 45.09 seconds. He was one of 27 runners who advanced to Sunday night’s semifinals, including Jacory Patterson, who began his collegiate career at Tech before transferring to Florida.

University of Virginia’s Wes Porter placed sixth overall (3:36.69) in the first round of the 1,500. Former Virginia Tech star Vincent Siattay was 11th (3:37.671) and former University of Virginia star Henry Wynn was 12th (3:37.673). All three advanced to Saturday night’s 25-man semifinals. University of Virginia’s Gary Martin placed 30th (3:39.23) and former Cavalier AJ Ernst was 32nd (3:39.72).

University of Virginia’s Nate Mountain placed third overall (8:21.22) in the first round of the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Virginia’s Yasin Saad was fourth (8:22.41) and former Cavalier Derek Johnson was 14th (8:27.64). All three advanced to Sunday night’s 14-man final.

Virginia Tech’s Connor McClure finished 20th overall (17 feet, 8 1/2 inches) in the first round of the men’s pole vault. He did not qualify for Sunday’s 13-man final.

Former Cavalier Kelly McKee was 19th overall (41-10 3/4) in the girls triple jump preliminaries. She did not advance to Saturday night’s 12-girl final.

Former Cavalier Michaela Mayer placed 31st overall in the first round of the 800 (2:03.48). She did not advance to Sunday’s 27-girl semifinals.

In the finals on Friday, Grant Fisher won the 10,000 meters in 27:49.47, joining Northern Arizona’s Woody Kincaid and NCAA record holder Nico Young as the first three runners from the trials to qualify for the Paris Olympics.
