MUMBAI: Senior officials involved in the electoral process are of the opinion that while the code of conduct for state assembly elections will come into force from September 20, voting will take place in the third or fourth week of October. It will most likely be a single-phase election, they said.
The official said that in 2019, the notification was issued on September 27, voting took place on October 21 and the results were declared on October 24. “Currently, we are gearing up for the state assembly elections and as per the directions of the Election Commission, the final electoral roll has to be published on August 20, 2024,” the official said.
With the Lok Sabha elections now in the books, political parties are gearing up for state assembly elections. MPCC president Nana Patole said the MVA will repeat its performance in the Lok Sabha elections and “will secure a clear majority.”
Sources said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Mahayuti Party plans to implement a series of populist policies to woo voters, and bureaucrats have been asked to come up with innovative schemes like those being implemented in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
On June 20, the Election Commission had asked the Chief Election Officers of the election-holding states of Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir to carry out a special summary revision of the photo electoral roll with June 1, 2024 as the record date.
The Election Commission has asked state CEOs to rationalise polling stations, remove discrepancies in electoral rolls, improve image quality and ensure good quality photographs by June 24, 2024. It has also asked them to publish the draft consolidated electoral roll by June 25. Special campaigns will be conducted every Saturday and Sunday and the final electoral roll will be published on August 20.
The Election Commission also instructed the CEO to ensure that all registered families remain in the same section and at the same place so that there is no disruption to families. The Election Commission said polling stations will be set up on the first floor so that voters do not have to travel more than two kilometres.
