Coach Gregg Berhalter’s team will return to the Copa America this summer as they prepare to host the tournament for the first time since 2016.
The tournament will feature matches across the country, with the U.S. drawn in Group C alongside 15-time champions Uruguay, Bolivia and Panama.
Leading up to the tournament, the U.S. is feeling increasingly confident it can match its semifinal performance as hosts eight years ago, when Jurgen Klinsmann’s team lost in the semifinals to Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
Copa America 2024 will also see a major change, increasing the number of participating nations to 16 for the first time in the tournament’s history, which dates back to 1916.

Why is the United States participating in Copa America 2024?
The United States, along with neighbors Canada and Mexico, in the Copa America may elicit some bewildered looks from fans who don’t regularly attend the tournament.
The Copa America traditionally consists of the 10 nations of the CONMEBOL confederation, but as the tournament has evolved it has also included CONCACAF and other nations, including Japan and Qatar.
In previous instances, countries not members of CONMEBOL participated by direct invitation from their confederations, meaning that invited countries could not play in every tournament.
However, the rulebook has been slightly changed for the 2024 tournament to allow for an increased number of teams, giving six CONCACAF nations the chance to qualify through the CONCACAF Nations League.
Jamaica and Panama advanced to the direct qualifying round after the United States and Mexico, while Canada and Costa Rica advanced through a playoff.
America’s Copa America records
The 2024 tournament will mark the fifth time the United States has played or been invited to the Copa America since its first appearance in 1993.
