Live updates from the Lok Sabha session: The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha began today with the swearing-in ceremony of all newly elected members and will continue until July 3. Following the two-day swearing-in ceremony, elections for the Speaker of the Lok Sabha are scheduled for June 26, and President Murmu is scheduled to address a joint sitting of both Houses on June 27.
The Leader of the Opposition in India’s Lower House is elected for the first time in a decade.
What do you expect today?
– President Draupadi Murmu will administer oath to Bharatiya Janata Party MP Bhartruhari Mahtab as Interim Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Mahtab will then ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is also the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, to administer oath as a Member of the Lok Sabha.
– President Murmu appointed Mr. Suresh Kodikunnir, Mr. Talikottai Rajthevar Bahl, Mr. Radha Mohan Singh, Mr. Phagan Singh Kulaste and Mr. Sudip Bandopadhyay to assist the interim Speaker in administering oath to the newly elected members.
– The first session is expected to be contentious as the Opposition parties are looking to challenge the BJP-led NDA government over the June 26 Speaker election, the controversy over the alleged leak of NEET-UG and UGC-NET documents and the controversy over the appointment of a caretaker Speaker.
– The Opposition parties will take on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over issues like rising prices, food inflation, heatwave deaths and “irregularities” in the conduct of recent exams.
When will a new chairman be elected?
On June 26, the Lok Sabha will elect a Speaker. In the new Lok Sabha, the Speaker will be elected by a simple majority vote. Until a Speaker is elected, a temporary Speaker will be appointed to temporarily perform essential functions. The term “temporary” indicates that the position is temporary.
18th Lok Sabha of India
This was the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha after general elections, in which the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 293 seats, the Indian Union won 234 seats, and the Indian National Congress retained its 99 seats.
The 17th and final session of the Indian Lok Sabha (Budget Session) was held from January 31 to February 10, 2024.

Live updates from the House session: What’s the controversy over the appointment of a Speaker pro tempore?
Indian Lok Sabha session live updates: The Indian National Congress has alleged that the government has “undermined the conventions of Parliament” by appointing seven-term Bharatiya Janata Party MP Bhartruhari Mahatab as interim Speaker instead of eight-term Lok Sabha member and Indian National Congress Party leader Kodikunnil Suresh, who should have been chosen for the post as the senior most MP as per convention.
– In a post on ‘X’ on Sunday, BJP leader Jairam Ramesh said, “Kodikunnir Suresh of the BJP, who is serving his eighth term, should have been made interim speaker. But Bharatiya Janata Party’s Baatruhari Mahtab was appointed on the baseless grounds that he is more deserving of the position as he has served for seven consecutive terms.”
– Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju said Mahatab was selected because he has the “longest continuous tenure as a member of the Lok Sabha”. Rijiju pointed out that Suresh was an eight-term member of the Lok Sabha, but his tenure was interrupted in 1998 and 2004 as he was not a member of the Lok Sabha. Hence, Mahatab was selected as he has the longest continuous tenure in the Lok Sabha.
