The U.S. Olympic swimming team is ready for the Paris Games.

A total of 46 American swimmers – 26 men and 20 women – qualified for the Paris 2024 Games at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials. The nine-day trials concluded Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Topping the roster are U.S. team stars Katie Ledecky and Caleb Dressel, both defending Olympic champions in multiple individual events.

Ledecky won four freestyle events (200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m) at the Trials, but will skip the 200m at the Olympics to focus on the 4x200m freestyle relay. Ledecky is a three-time 800m champion and the reigning 1500m champion. She’ll also be looking to reclaim the 400m title after finishing second to Australia’s Ariarne Titmus at the pandemic-delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Ledecky, a seven-time Olympic gold medalist, is two gold medals away from breaking the all-time record for women’s swimmers held by American Jenny Thompson.

Dressel placed first in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 butterfly at the trials, qualifying him for two individual events and the 4×100 freestyle relay, in both of which he is the reigning Olympic champion.

Caleb Dressel will officially compete at the Paris Olympics to defend his gold medal in the 50-meter freestyle.

Dressel also won gold in the 100-meter freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics, but this time he placed third and missed out on qualifying.

Other American swimmers heading to Paris to defend their individual titles are reigning 800 and 1,500 freestyle champion Bobby Finke and reigning 400 individual medley champion Chase Kalisz.

Regan Smith and University of Virginia’s Gretchen Walsh also set world records in the heats. Smith, who won three medals in her first Olympic Games appearance in Tokyo, set a new world record in the 100m backstroke in the final with a time of 57.13 seconds, beating the previous record of 57.33 seconds set by Kayleigh McKeown of Australia in 2023.

American swimmer Regan Smith set a new world record in the 100-meter backstroke at the U.S. National Swimming Championships on Tuesday.

Walsh then set a new world record in the 100m butterfly in the semi-finals with a time of 55.18 seconds, beating the previous record of 55.48 seconds set by Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom in 2016.

Gretchen Walsh broke the world record in the women’s 100-meter butterfly semifinals on Saturday night, the first day of the U.S. Trials.

Smith and Walsh each qualified for a total of three events. Smith won all three events he qualified for (100m backstroke, 200m backstroke and 200m butterfly) and Walsh won the 100m butterfly.

Two other swimmers who caught the eye at the trials were Kate Douglas and Notre Dame’s Chris Juliano. Douglas, who won bronze in the 200m individual medley in her Tokyo Olympic debut, won three individual events (100m freestyle, 200m breaststroke and 200m individual medley) to earn a spot on the 4x100m freestyle relay team.

Meanwhile, Giuliano beat Dressel to win the 100m freestyle, qualifying him to compete in a total of five freestyle events (50m, 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and 4x200m relay) in his Olympic debut.
