Karachi is facing a mysterious and worrying trend as the number of unidentified bodies found in various parts of the city has now reached 22, Geo News reported on Wednesday.

Despite the efforts of volunteers from Pakistani non-profit welfare organisations, 22 of the bodies remain unidentified.

Five more bodies were discovered on Tuesday, adding to the list of unexplained deaths.

A spokesman for the Chhipa Welfare Society said in a statement that its volunteers had found five more bodies in different parts of Karachi, “including three that appeared to be drug addicts, but their identities have not been confirmed so far.”

Chipa runs an ambulance network in the city and confirmed the number of unidentified bodies had reached 22, Geo News reported.

Of the 22 bodies, about 24 remain unclaimed as their families have not come to claim them.

What caused these deaths?

The deaths in Karachi are believed to be due to the ongoing heatwave in the port city, which has affected several city residents, many of whom have been hospitalised with heatstroke.

Another issue the city appears to be addressing is the drug problem.

Azeem Khan, an official at Karachi’s Edhi Foundation, told The News that most of those found dead in Karachi were drug addicts who died in the extreme heat under the influence of drugs.

Elderly people were also subjected to violence after they protested against a group of drug users for openly using drugs outside their homes, ARY News reported.

The case highlights the growing problem of drug abuse in Pakistan, particularly the prevalence of “ice,” or crystal methamphetamine, which has increased in recent years.

Ice is easy to obtain and relatively cheap compared to other drugs, which has contributed to its popularity among Pakistani youth.
