NBA Draft 2024: Live updates, picks, ratings, time, channel, Atlanta gets Zachary Lisacher with top pick

While the French star has his name at the top of many draft boards, that’s where the similarities between the 2024 NBA Draft and the 2023 edition end. As Rick Pitino once said, Victor Wembanyama will not be walking through the Atlanta Hawks’ door this season, as the team has the No. 1 pick for the first time since 1975. At the time, the team also drafted Hall of Famer David Thompson, who did not choose the team, instead opting to sign with the Denver Nuggets of the ABA.

While there’s no worry about which league the top players will choose this year, there is uncertainty about what the top picks will be. International prospects Zachary Lisacher (France) and Alex Sarr (France) and college players Reed Sheppard (Kentucky) and Stephon Castle (University of Connecticut) are among the top players in a draft that doesn’t have an undisputed No. 1 prospect.

Also in the spotlight this draft is the question of where or if Bronny James will be selected, as his famous father has long said he wants to play alongside his son before retiring, but LeBron James’ agent, Rich Paul, recently said that LeBron and Bronny are not a package deal.

For the first time, the NBA Draft will be held over two days, with the first round taking place on Wednesday night and the second round on Thursday, June 27 at 4 p.m. ET.

    Topic is coming off a partial tear of his ACL and will need to be patient during his recovery. He is one of the best passers in this draft class, averaging 5.5 assists per game for the Serbians, and is big enough at 6’6″ for the point guard position.

    Buzelis shot less than 30 percent from three-point range in his lone season with the Ignite, but he has a 6-foot-9 frame and the ability to spread the floor. He’s good at getting past people off the dribble and has good footwork and ball skills for dribble handoffs on the wing.

    Williams is one of the best defensive wings in this class, as he can defend positions one through four well and excels in drop coverage on switches, and while he needs to improve his ball-handling abilities, at 19 years old he is more developed than his older brother, Oklahoma City Thunder forward Jalen Williams, was at the same age.

    Eddie is a ready backup center and has the best post-up play of any center in the draft, averaging 25.2 points and 12.2 rebounds per game last season. His limitations are in the pick-and-roll, where he scored just 8% of his points. He also lacks the foot speed to defend the switch, forcing him to function as a drop-cover center.

    Dillingham is one of the best guards with the ball in his hands and can run downhill to pressure the rim, and pairing him with Wenbanyama would be an exciting combination, but at 6-foot-2 and 164 pounds, his size is a bit of a concern for an NBA lead guard.

    Two-time national champion and star big man at the University of Connecticut, Donovan Clingan, is transferring to Portland and could form a formidable forward line for the Blazers alongside 2018 first-round draft pick Deandre Ayton.

    Clingan has all the ingredients to be a long-term starting center in the NBA and is mobile for a guy who stands at 7’2″. He’s more than just a big man who runs the rim, and he can throw a variety of options in the pick-and-roll, including slipping, rolling to the basket, pinning the guy and taking a jump shot.

  • Tijan Salone joins Charlotte in sixth place, becoming the third French player to be selected

    At 6’9″, Salone is a solid wing player with the build to be more than just a catch-and-shoot threat on the perimeter. He worked on adding muscle to his frame last season and improved his athleticism in the lane while playing for Cholet in the LNB Pro A league.

    Holland averaged 19.5 points and 6.7 rebounds this season with the Ignite G League. Though he is turnover-prone at times, his 6-foot-8 frame and explosiveness off the dribble and in transition give him room to grow in the NBA at just 18 years old. His movement off the ball could use some work, as he sometimes blocks lanes trying to get to the rim.

    Castle was one of the best defensive guards in college basketball during his lone year at the University of Connecticut and showed significant improvement in his 3-point shooting during his pre-draft period. He has the potential to be an elite two-way player in the NBA and a key part of the defense alongside Victor Wembanyama.

    Sheppard brings elite collegiate (blue) pedigree to Houston after following in the footsteps of his father, Jeff Sheppard, who was the 1998 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player and starred at Kentucky, where the Wildcats won the national title that year.

    Shepard is averaging 3.5 three-pointers per game at a rate of over 52% and would be a great combo guard at the NBA level. Though he’s a little small at 6’2″, he has the high IQ and consistency of a young, skilled guard just entering the NBA.

    This has been Sarr’s preferred landing spot, where he can get out quickly and add some defensive relief by protecting the rim well. Offensively, he has a fluid jump shot with pick-and-pop and the potential to extend beyond the 3-point line.

    The Atlanta Hawks, with their stellar backcourt featuring Trae Young and Dejounte Murray, are looking overseas to try and reclaim their playoff hopes.

    Lisacher’s length on the wing and defensive versatility allow him to quickly adapt and contribute in any situation, and he’s not just a catch-and-shoot threat, but has also shown signs of developing as a facilitator when the shot isn’t going down.

    Victor Wembanyama, even though he’s no longer the star of the show, was still the name on everyone’s lips when the NBA Draft results were announced on Tuesday. That’s how life goes when there are no exciting or well-known names in Wednesday’s first round of the draft.

    But first-round pick players Alexandre Sarr and Zachary Lisacher are also from France and are following in Wembanyama’s footsteps.

    Sarr had repeatedly turned down invitations to work out with the Atlanta Hawks, who have the top draft pick, and Hawks general manager Landry Fields confirmed the decision on radio earlier in the day.

    That leaves Researcher, but in a draft without a clear first pick, anything can happen.

    Lisacher has long been on the pros’ radar — he and Sarr played against each other in their early teens — but Lisacher took a leap last year. The 6-foot-9 forward looked to have struggled at the Nike Hoop Summit a year ago but has since transformed into a lockdown shooter.
