If you’ve recently purchased an electric car, you’re undoubtedly happy with your purchase.

The technology requires less maintenance, is much quieter than standard gas-guzzling cars, and emits no global-warming pollutants on the road.

Arriving at a charging station to witness this type of vandalism is a major inconvenience for EV drivers.

Anti-inflation legislation has also made EVs significantly more affordable: First-time EV drivers will be happy to find that refueling is much cheaper than cars that run on polluting fuels, and charging stations are on the rise across the US.

Unfortunately, some EV drivers find themselves in a situation where they are trying to charge their car but are unable to do so.

One Reddit user complained about the issue to the r/Seattle community, sharing a photo of a charging station in Georgetown with a severed cable.

“I’ve had an EV since 2023 (and I love it) and have had 2 years of free charging on the Electrify America network,” the caption began. “There have been some challenges, but overall it’s been easy and convenient. I’ve used many charging stations, but this one in Georgetown cut my charging cable and confiscated it for the 3rd time in 8 months.”

There are a few theories as to why this is happening at charging stations across the country. One is that thieves are cutting the cables and stealing the valuable copper wires inside.

Another is that some people are doing it as a form of protest against cleaner electric vehicles, as well as some internal combustion engine drivers who park at EV charging spots to restrict access, a practice known as “ICEing.”

Whatever the reason, arriving at a charging station to witness this type of vandalism is a major inconvenience for EV drivers.

Someone in the comments section also noticed the problem at this particular location. “This site has been a big problem,” they said. “We’ve been tracking it for several years.”

Thankfully, it appears some charging providers are starting to wake up to the problem, with the original poster noting that local Electrify America and Bank of America charging stations now have “loud alarms and multiple cameras.”

Still, some lamented the perpetrator’s thoughtless actions. “My God, some people really hate the environment,” they said.

Admittedly, if this was an act of protest, it’s a strange thing to get angry about. Having electric cars on the nation’s roads would help slow the rate of global warming by reducing the amount of planet-warming pollutants emitted by the transportation sector.

And because EVs don’t have tailpipes, they don’t emit particulate pollution that can worsen respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, improving local air quality.
