There was no overwhelming first-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, but like last year, French players were the focus of attention this year. After Victor Wembanyama won the 2023 draft, four French players were selected on the first night of the NBA Draft, starting with Atlanta’s first overall pick Zachary Lizacher and ending with the Wizards’ second pick Alex Sarr.

College stars like Kentucky’s Reed Shepard (No. 3, Rockets), Connecticut’s Donovan Clingan (No. 7, Trail Blazers) and Purdue’s Zach Eddy (No. 9, Memphis) all had their names called early. There weren’t any big surprises in the first round, but Tennessee star and 2024 SEC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year Dalton Knecht went 17th overall to the Los Angeles Lakers.

You can find our analysis of all 30 first-round picks here For the first time, the NBA Draft will be held over two days, with the second round starting at 4pm ET on Thursday.

The NBA champion Boston Celtics finished off the first round by selecting Baylor Scheerman.

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: a

    • Pre-draft ranking: 32

    • school: Clayton

    • height: 6 ft 7 in

    • weight: 205

Scheierman’s shooting creativity and size as a perimeter player are what made him a first-round pick. He is a fourth-year player out of Creighton University, where he averaged 18.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game as a senior.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 8:17 PM PDT

The first USC player selected was not Bronny James, but Isaiah Collier, who went to the Utah Jazz with the 29th pick.

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: A-

    • Pre-draft ranking: 18

    • school: U.S.C.

    • height: 6 feet 5 inches

    • weight: 210

It’s shocking that Collier fell so far in the draft, considering he entered last season as the No. 1 high school player. The biggest flaws in his game are his outside jump shot and the number of turnovers he committed in his lone year at USC. He excels in the open court and has great body control around the rim. Given the spacing and pace of the NBA game, he could be a bargain for the Jazz.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 8:15 PM PDT

Virginia native Ryan Dunn, an ACC All-Defensive selection, is headed to Phoenix with the 28th pick.

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: B

    • Pre-draft ranking: 41

    • school: Virginia

    • height: 6 feet 8 inches

    • weight: 216

Dunn, 6’8″, averaged 2.3 blocks and just under two steals per game during his sophomore season at Virginia and was one of the best perimeter defenders in college basketball this season. The biggest weakness in his game is the three-point shot, and he shot just 20% from three points last season.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 8:08 PM PDT

Terrence Shannon Jr. of Illinois to Minnesota

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: a

    • Pre-draft ranking: 33

    • school: Illinois

    • height: 6 feet 6 inches

    • weight: 225

Shannon is a three-level scorer who has improved his 3-point shooting accuracy throughout his collegiate career, finishing his senior season at Illinois shooting 36.2 percent from three-point range. He’s an older, more experienced guard at 23 years old and could join Minnesota and contribute immediately.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 8:07 PM PDT

The 26th pick was Dillon Jones from Weber State (a nod to Dame Time), who is headed to Oklahoma City.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 7:59 PM PDT

Pacomé Dadier was selected 25th overall by the Knicks, becoming the fourth French player to be selected in the first round.

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: B+

    • Pre-draft ranking: twenty two

    • school: France

    • height: 6 feet 8 inches

    • weight: 210

Daddietto is one of the youngest players drafted, just 18 years old, and will be a draft-and-stash development project for the Knicks. When he plays, what stands out first is his 6-foot-8 frame and strength on the perimeter, and he has shown signs of being a composed playmaker from the wing, coming off a strong season with Germany’s Ratiopharm Ulm.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 7:58 PM PDT

Ki’Shawn George was taken 24th overall and is headed to Washington.

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: B+

    • Pre-draft ranking: 11

    • school: Miami (FL)

    • height: 6 feet 8 inches

    • weight: 205

George went through a growth spurt two years ago, growing from 6’3″ to 6’8″. He still passes like a point guard, but he plays more on the perimeter. His 3-point shooting is the most intriguing, having shot 41% off 3-pointers off the bench in his lone year with Miami.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 7:51 PM PDT

The Bucks selected AJ Johnson with the 23rd pick.

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

Johnson’s potential as a 6-foot-5 combo guard is intriguing; he’s been in the gym with Rockets guard Jalen Green since the eighth grade. Their habits as playmakers are similar, and while Johnson is still in his infancy as a prospect, he could be one of the best players in this draft in a couple of years.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 7:35 PM PDT

After selecting No. 22, Phoenix traded the draft rights to Darron Holmes II to Denver.

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: B+

    • Pre-draft ranking: 27

    • school: Dayton

    • height: 6 feet 10 inches

    • weight: 235

Holmes has the potential to be a hybrid big man thanks to his refined inside scoring and improved shot selection from beyond the arc, where he is averaging 38.6% from three-point range.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 7:27 PM PDT

Baylor big man Yves Missi heads to New Orleans

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: B+

    • Pre-draft ranking: twenty three

    • school: Baylor

    • height: 7 feet 0 inches

    • weight: 235

After a year at Baylor, Missy still has plenty of room to grow, but his ability to defend blocks and run the floor in transition suggests he could be a rim-running big man in the NBA at 7 feet tall.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 7:20 PM PDT

Jaylon Tyson, a graduate of the University of California, transferred from the University of Texas to Texas Tech University and then to the University of California before attending Cleveland.

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: A-

    • Pre-draft ranking: 28

    • school: California

    • height: 6 ft 7 in

    • weight: 215

Tyson is one of the best scorers in the Pac-12 and can do a little bit of everything: he’s strong on the ball, cuts well and finishes through contact, but his defensive mobility and ability to keep opponents forward still have room for improvement.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 7:18 PM PDT
  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 7:12 PM PDT

Baylor University’s 2023-24 leading scorer, Jacob Walter, went 19th to Toronto

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: B+

    • Pre-draft ranking: 19

    • school: Baylor

    • height: 6 feet 5 inches

    • weight: 195

Walter is 6’5″ and has solid build for a shooting guard, and his lone year at Baylor has shown him to be a much better shooter. His 3-point shooting was a bit shaky during his freshman season at Baylor, but with the space available in the NBA, he should be able to improve his chances of success.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 7:06 PM PDT

Colorado’s Tristan da Silva heads to Orlando in the 18th spot

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: A-

    • Pre-draft ranking: 20

    • school: Colorado

    • height: 6 ft 9 in

    • weight: 220

The senior forward is a 40 percent 3-point shooter and has the potential to be a hybrid four in the NBA thanks to his solid inside-outside play and ability to get to his spot out of pick-and-roll options.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 7:03 PM PDT

The Lakers selected Dalton Knecht, a talented shooter from Tennessee, as the SEC Player of the Year with the 17th pick.

After a major downturn, Dalton Knecht, the breakout star of the 2023-24 college basketball season, is headed to Los Angeles to play for the Lakers.

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: A-

    • Pre-draft ranking: 8

    • school: Tennessee

    • height: 6 feet 6 inches

    • weight: 213

Knecht averaged 21.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game at Tennessee, the SEC’s leading scorer. At 23 years old, he’s older than most first-round picks, but he’s an immediate plug-and-play player who can contribute with his size and three levels of scoring.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 6:54 PM PDT

Duke University star Jared McCain went to Philadelphia with the 16th overall pick.

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: a

    • Pre-draft ranking: 17

    • school: Duke

    • height: 6 feet 3 inches

    • weight: 197

McCain is one of the best shooters in this draft, shooting 41.8 percent from 3-point range and putting up an impressive shot at the combine in front of NBA executives and scouts. Though he’s small at 6-foot-3 and 197 pounds, Philadelphia knows exactly what they’re getting out of him as a reliable shooter who can compete at a high level.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 6:49 PM PDT

Heat acquires Indiana native Kelel Ware

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: B+

    • Pre-draft ranking: 16

    • school: Indiana

    • height: 7 feet 0 inches

    • weight: 242

Ware improved dramatically between his freshman year at Oregon and his sophomore year at Indiana, showing more potential as a pick-and-roll big man pressuring the rim, his athleticism helping him guard the perimeter off switches, and his ball-handling has improved, allowing him to start breaking off missed shots.

  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 6:39 PM PDT

Pittsburgh native Bub Carrington heads to Washington

The Washington Wizards added an explosive scorer to their backcourt with the pick they acquired in the Dani Avdija trade earlier in the day.

    Yahoo Sports Commentary

    • Draft Grade: A-

    • Pre-draft ranking: 15

    • school: Pittsburgh

    • height: 6 feet 5 inches

    • weight: 190

Carrington has had a growth spurt late in the draft, approaching 6’5″ for a point guard, and is a late draft pick. At just 18 years old, he still has a lot of potential, and his quick reaction time and excellent shot creation out of the pick-and-roll should help him make an immediate impact.
