๐ฑ USMNT on the brink of Copa America
The United States’ domestic Copa America campaign was in upset as they lost 2-1 to Panama at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Thursday. Both teams had players sent off, but Timothy Weah was sent off just 18 minutes into the game, forcing Gregg Berhalter’s side to play the full 70 minutes with 10 men. The Stars and Stripes took the lead after four minutes with a goal from Folarin Balogun, but Cesar Blackman equalized for the home team less than five minutes into the half-hour. Los Canaleros dominated possession and created more chances, but Jose Fajardo scored the winner eight minutes from time before Adalberto Carrasquilla’s red card.
A disappointed Berhalter and his players will now face league leaders and title favourites Uruguay without Weah. Chuck Booth felt he had let the team down.: of The U.S. coach spoke about it after the game..
- Berhalter: “I know the result is really disappointing, but you can’t fault the team effort, especially after missing a man. The boys fought hard and we came very close to getting a point, but there was so much more to this game and it’s unfortunate that Timmy made a stupid decision that left us short… One mistake and we got punished.”
- Booth rating: “Where do we start? The golden rule is to not touch your own hand, but Weah didn’t. He shoved a Panama player and got a well-deserved red card. He let his team down and will miss an important match against Uruguay. Because it was a red card for violent conduct, Weah could face further suspension if the USMNT goes ahead.” Rating: 3
Currently, the U.S. and Panama are tied for second place in Group C behind Marcelo Bielsa’s Celeste, but it’s a tough situation considering the U.S. faces a South American team next. There are many different scenarios that Berhalter and his team need. They can be counted on to advance from their home group, and while that’s a lofty position, Booth doesn’t believe it’s the worst possible fall for the USMNT. FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualification Failure.
Group C scenarios for the United States
- With the US victory: If Panama draws or loses, the U.S. advances to the knockout stage. If Panama wins, the U.S. advances, but they will need to have a better goal differential than Panama. As it stands, the U.S. has a two-goal advantage.
- In case of a tie with the USA: The United States will only advance if Panama draws or loses.
- If the US loses: For the USA to advance, they need to have a better goal differential than Panama and Panama lose. If the USA loses 4-0 and Panama loses 1-0, Panama will advance.
- Booth 2017: “Missed out on World Cup qualification. Christian Pulisic’s goal wasn’t enough to avoid a disastrous defeat against the Soca Warriors. Tensions rose at Kouba’s Ato Boldon Stadium when Omar Gonzalez scored an errant goal and Alvin Jones gave Trinidad a 2-0 lead before halftime. After the U.S. fired coach Jurgen Klinsmann, Bruce Arena took over as coach, but it wasn’t enough to propel the team to the World Cup in a game that marked the beginning of a major shakeup in U.S. soccer.

๐ช๐บ Euro 2024 kicks off with knockout format
This weekend, UEFA Euro 2024 enters the round of 16, or knockout stage, with a host of big names lined up: England need to improve significantly to face Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen, hosts Germany face winless Denmark in Dortmund and are well-positioned to reach the quarter-finals, Italy need to improve to face strong Switzerland in Berlin, and Spain want to maintain their 100% win rate and avoid a major upset against surprise side Georgia.
Germany v Denmark, June 29
The hosts topped Group A, which was expected, but then they almost lost to Switzerland on the final day, which would have meant a matchup with Italy. Germany might have been better off predicting this draw now that they face Denmark in Dortmund. Julian Nagelsmann’s side face a Scandinavian side with three draws and just two goals to their name. Denmark should not be underestimated, but they don’t look as threatening as they did in 2020, while Germany are suddenly feeling the love of their home fans after years of indifference.
Switzerland v Italy, June 29
Few international teams like to play Switzerland, and Italy are no exception. Italy needed some late drama to get out of Group B, but the Nazis nearly beat Germany on home soil. This could be one of the best round of 16 matchups, but only if Italy improves from their disappointing performances so far. Switzerland rarely tries to do anything flashy, but their approach is highly efficient.
England v Slovakia, 30 June
Given England’s struggles against Slovenia, this weekend’s Euro last-16 match won’t be one to watch. That said, England need to improve significantly if they are to live up to their pre-tournament reputation as favourites. This is Gareth Southgate’s chance to reach the quarter-finals against Francesco Calzona’s underrated Slovakia, who are clearly the underdogs here. For bored England fans, it’s only going to get better.
Spain v Georgia, June 30
Spain’s impressive performance in Group B and the only 100% winning record in this Euro group stage has made them favourites to win. La Roja are in very good form but will now be tested by a Georgian team who are impressing with every game and winning over fans. Spain are averaging two goals per game so far but Georgia have Germany’s top scorer in Giorgi Mikhautadze. Along with Giorgi Mamaldashvili and Khubicha Kvaratskheria, Willy Sagnol’s quality squad will be looking to add more goals to what has already been a historic summer.
