As both a personal stylist and fashion editor, I have a front row seat to emerging trends, and one that’s steadily growing in popularity is the dropped-V-waist dress.
Now, when you hear the term “drop waist,” you might conjure up images of the glitz and glamour of the ’20s: flapper dresses and jazz nights. But for those with a curvier figure, it can also send shivers down your spine.
Let’s be honest, while a drop waist may look appealing to some, it’s not necessarily a popular choice for many.
But wait, there’s a new twist to this style, and trust us, it’s both chic and practical.
Introducing the V-waist dress, featuring a dropped-waist bodice with a sharply angled Basque waistline that beautifully accentuates the waistline before transitioning into a gathered skirt.
Now, let’s be honest: Remember when every dress seemed to have more cutouts than fabric? Yep, I remember that time too.
But fear not: the drop waist trend has finally answered our prayers for something a little more wearable, as if to acknowledge that many of us want to look fabulous without feeling like we’re wrapped up in a wrap.

V-waist style dresses are currently experiencing a lot of popularity, especially across the ocean in Europe and the U.S. My prediction is that this trend will pick up steam soon, with a variety of styles, fabrics and colors appearing in the upcoming warmer seasons.
Want some inspiration? We have it! Take a look at some styles of drop V-waist dresses.
For now, I personally don’t plan on trying this style anytime soon.
The trend is starting to catch on, but here in Australia, the traditional dropped waist still has strong roots – but if I were a gambling woman (and let’s be honest, I love gambling), I’d wait until the warmer weather to fully embrace and shop this style.
After all, timing is everything in the fashion world, so hopefully we’ll see more curved and sleeved options next time we talk about this trend (stay tuned for part two!).
Now, let me add that there is a style of dropped V-waist dress that is especially trending in the US. Just search for Abercrombie’s V-waist dropped dress trending on TikTok and Instagram and you’ll see why it’s so trending.
Unfortunately, every time we restock this dress sells out very quickly, and we think one of the reasons it’s so popular is that it’s available in an incredible range of sizes (Aussies take note…).
