India-Pakistan Relations: US claims to ‘condemn terrorism anywhere’ but says ‘we will continue to…’

US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel expressed his opposition to terrorism at a press conference on Monday, July 1st.

The US official, while replying to a question on where US relations stand in the triangular US-India, India-Pakistan and India-US relations, said they would like to see terrorism condemned in any country, anywhere on earth. “We would like to see terrorism condemned in any country, anywhere on earth,” Vedant Patel said, reported ANI.

Foreign Minister Vedant Patel reiterated the US’s stance on terrorism and stressed on building good relations with neighbouring countries. These remarks came amid India’s consistent position that terrorism and negotiations cannot co-exist with Pakistan.

The US official noted that India welcomes any country that seeks to have better relations with its neighbours, adding: “But ultimately this is a matter between India and Pakistan and of course we welcome any country that wants to have better relations with its neighbours. But on this matter I have nothing to suggest.” Ani.

He further emphasised that India is a country with which the US is deepening its ties in several important areas. “India is a country with which the US is deepening its ties in several important areas, particularly in terms of deepening economic ties, deepening security cooperation,” Vedant Patel was quoted as saying. “This is an area where we will continue to nurture our relations,” he added, reported news agency ANI.

Referring to past state visits, the State Department’s principal deputy spokesperson noted that the United States hosted India on a state visit last summer. U.S. officials said they expect many areas of deepening cooperation going forward, highlighting Prime Minister Modi’s state visit to the United States and also referring to National Security Advisor Sullivan’s visit to Delhi a few weeks ago.
