Biden denounces Supreme Court immunity decision as emboldening lawless president

Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark decision holding that former President Donald Trump is entitled to immunity from liability for certain presidential actions in federal election interference lawsuits, effectively guaranteeing that litigation related to Trump’s efforts to block the transfer of power after the 2020 election will not be commenced before Election Day.

The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 split along ideological lines, found that Trump was entitled to the core functions of his presidency and to “at least a presumptive immunity from criminal prosecution” for acts “within the outer boundaries of his office.” The court’s three liberal justices said a decision by the conservative majority would have “devastating consequences” for the US.

Biden echoed the liberal justices, warning that the ruling means there are “effectively no limits on what the president can do.”

The ruling sets the stage for a hearing before U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan on which charges in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s indictment should be considered official conduct. Hurricane Beryl has strengthened into a Category 5 storm and is heading towards Jamaica

Beryl made landfall yesterday morning as a Category 4 storm on parts of Grenada and the Windward Islands.
