CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Bar Councils of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to appoint an Election Officer and conduct the Women Lawyers Association (WLA) elections by September 30. A division bench of Justices SM Subramaniam and C Kumarappan said the association officials should stop blaming each other and work for the welfare of women lawyers. The court further directed the associations to hand over all details, including the membership roll, to the Bar Council Secretariat within two weeks. The Bar Councils were directed to finalise the electoral roll, appoint an Election Officer and conduct the elections as per their Articles of Association. The court asserted that the upcoming elections must be held on time without any delay. “Officers cannot hold their posts beyond their term of office. It is a democratic process and we have to respect it,” the court said. The court further directed that the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act be strictly adhered to in conducting the elections. tnn
