Criminal investigation could delay Broncos DL Ayoma Uwazulike’s return

As Broncos defensive lineman Aioma Uwazulike looks set to return from his gambling suspension, one particular development could delay things.

According to 9News.com’s Mike Kliss, the investigation is being carried out by the Colorado Department of Taxation and the Arapahoe County Attorney’s Office. Criminal charges may be filed.

Chris said the NFL is waiting for that process to be completed before deciding whether to reinstate Uwazurike, who can apply for reinstatement on July 24.

Uwazurike is accused of placing 32 bets on five Broncos games, including one in which he played.

The investigation stems from an Iowa investigation that was stalled when the Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation determined that Uwazulike and others misused geolocation software.

Uwazurike is represented by attorney Harvey Steinberg, who has represented many Broncos players over the years.

“The Iowa court has dismissed all of the evidence seized as having been illegally seized,” Steinberg told Chris. “This decision is binding on the Colorado courts and prosecutors. As a result of this decision, all charges in Iowa have been dismissed, making it difficult or impossible to litigate here.”

Uwazulike was a fourth-round draft pick in 2022. Chris said there is still a chance he could return to the roster if the league reinstates him.
