NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif on Tuesday criticised Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s lack of leadership in the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup in the Americas, where Pakistan were shocked by newcomers USA and eventual winners India in the group stage and missed out on a place in the Super Eight.

Latif called Babar a “weak” captain and expressed disappointment in his leadership.

Under Babar’s guidance, Pakistan also failed to reach the semi-finals of last year’s ODI World Cup, losing to India, Australia, Afghanistan, South Africa and England in the group stage.

Babar’s form and captaincy are once again being heavily questioned after Pakistan’s lackluster performance in the ICC T20 World Cup, where they lost to the United States and India in the group stage, dashing their hopes of making it into the Super Eight of the mega tournament.

Babar has scored 122 runs in four matches at an average of 40.66.

“Babar Azam should not have been removed from the captaincy after the ODI World Cup in India. Shaheen took his place. But Babar’s second tenure as captain was weak. Babar looked weak. This is not how team selection should be done,” Latif said.

“Babar did not play (in the T20 World Cup). His biggest mistake was taking up captaincy again. If he continues as captain, it will be an even bigger mistake. He is moving away from his game,” the former cricketer said.
