Kannapolis, North Carolina – Brooks Bryan (Troy) hit a grand slam to lead Team USA to a 6-0 victory and their fifth straight win in the 21st World Baseball Softball Confederation-sanctioned USA vs. Chinese Taipei International Friendship Series on Wednesday, July 3, at Atrium Health Park.
What actually happened
- The Americans extended their hitless streak to 15 innings, facing 49 batters, but broke through in the top of the fourth inning when So Yuqing singled to right field.
- Nolan Shubert (Oklahoma State) hit a two-run double down the right field line with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning, sending Danny Dickinson (West Richland, Wash.) and Drew Burress (Georgia Tech) home to give Team USA a 2-0 lead.
- Bryan smashed a grand slam down the left field line in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the series for Team USA.
- Malachi Witherspoon (Oklahoma) and Nate Snead (Tennessee) pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing no hits and helping Team USA win the series.
Notable Stats
- With a two-run double, Shubert became the only player to reach base in all five games of the series. He finished the series with a .600 batting average, .818 on-base percentage, and 1.400 slugging percentage. He was named the Series MVP after posting a 2.218 OPS with two doubles, two home runs, seven RBIs, and 12 walks.
- Tucker Biven (Louisville) was an outstanding relief pitcher for Team USA, striking out five in 2.2 innings.
- Burress pitched well, allowing two hits, one walk and two runs, and was the only batter with multiple hits on the night.
