The 2024 UK election has narrowed down to a close race between incumbent Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Labour’s Keir Starmer, but there are other big-name candidates who could have an impact on this year’s UK polls.
The leading candidates for the 2024 UK election are:
1. Rishi Sunak:
The Indian-origin British Prime Minister has one of the lowest approval ratings at 44. His Conservative party will now face off against Keir Starmer’s Labour. Mr Sunak has failed to deliver on campaign promises such as reducing medical waiting lists and stopping illegal immigration, but immigration is one of the key issues influencing the UK polls this time around.
2. Keir Starmer:
Opinion polls predict Keir Starmer will succeed Sunak as British prime minister. Starmer became Labour leader in 2020 after succeeding left-winger Jeremy Corbyn.
3. Nigel Farage:
Nigel Farage, leader of Britain’s right-wing Reform Party, has been embroiled in a racism scandal after earning the nickname “Mr Brexit” from former US President Donald Trump in 2016 after persuading a majority of Britons to vote to leave the European Union.
4. John Swinney:
John Swinney does not hold a seat in the UK Parliament, but he was the first Minister of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh.
Davie leads the Liberal Democrats and is hoping to give the Conservatives a tough fight, particularly in the south of England.
6. Carla Denier:
Carla Denier is co-leader of the Green Party with Adrian Ramsay and she is hoping to win in Bristol Central this time.
British citizens will go to the polls on Thursday 4th July to elect a new Parliament.
