Mitchell thanked Kings fans and Sacramento in a heartfelt post after the trade. Originally published on NBC Sports Bay Area
Former high draft pick Davion Mitchell was a solid role player during his three-year tenure in Sacramento before being traded to the Toronto Raptors on June 27.
The 25-year-old guard served as a key defensive stopper for the Kings and, although his role was reduced after a strong rookie season, he is grateful for the experience he had in Sacramento.
Mitchell posted a statement on Instagram on Wednesday, thanking the Kings organization and their fans for their support.
The message read, “Thank you to the great city of Sacramento and all of our amazing fans.
“From the moment I was drafted, you all welcomed me warmly and supported me through the good times and the bad. To all my teammates, coaches, trainers and staff, thank you for everything. The memories we made are unforgettable and it was such a pleasure growing together on and off the court.”
“Sacramento, you believed in me from the beginning and will always hold a special place in my heart. I am honored to wear the Kings on my chest.”
“I’m excited for the next chapter, but I’ll never forget where it all began.”
During his time with the Kings, Mitchell averaged 7.4 points and 2.8 assists in 20.4 minutes per game while shooting 32.7% from the 3-point line. Coming off a national championship season with Baylor, Mitchell’s on-ball ability was his greatest asset and he was often tasked with key defensive matchups.
Mitchell was traded to Toronto along with forward Sasha Bezenkov and the 45th pick in last week’s NBA draft in exchange for sixth-year wing Jalen McDaniels.
With his time in the backcourt declining alongside Kevin Huerter and Malik Monk, Mitchell will look to see increased playing time with a young Raptors team.
Whatever his future role, we can be sure he’ll be welcomed back to Sacramento as a visitor next season.
