* Heat warning Areas near Interstate 95 from noon to 8 p.m.*

It’s a somewhat subjective rating of the weather for that day on a scale of 0 to 10.

4/10: The heat is on its way and a storm pattern is lurking – hopefully not at a time that will disrupt the fireworks.

  • today: Mostly sunny, partly cloudy with increasing humidity, possible afternoon storms. Max: 89-94
  • tonight: Rain and storms continue through the evening, with high humidity and light winds. Min: 68-76
  • tomorrow: Partly cloudy with high humidity, mostly afternoon rain and storms. Max: 89-95

Happy Independence Day! After a few pleasant days, heat and humidity are returning today and will continue through the weekend. The muggy air will likely bring showers and storms over the next three days, especially in the late afternoon and evening. Hopefully the showers will pass before tonight’s fireworks on the National Mall, but we recommend bringing rain gear. A weak cold front will bring a little relief on Sunday.

Today (Independence Day): A light southwest breeze will encourage moisture back into the area (dew points will rise into the low 70s). Highs will be mostly in the low 90s, but with humidity it could feel like 100 or even closer to 105. Make sure to stay hydrated and take breaks if you’re outdoors for extended periods of time.

Clouds will move in during the afternoon, bringing rain and storms into the area from mid-afternoon to early evening. Storms could bring dangerous lightning, heavy rain and strong winds. Confidence: Medium to high

tonight: At this time, most of the rain and storms are expected to move eastward around evening, so most areas will likely see fireworks displays after sundown. Winds will be too light to move much smoke, and temperatures will be muggy in the 80s F. Overnight lows will be in the upper 60s F to mid 70s F. Reliability: Medium to High

Tomorrow (Friday): Clouds will still be hanging around from yesterday’s storms, but the sun will still be out and highs will mostly be in the low to mid 90s Fahrenheit. High humidity will make it feel about 10 degrees warmer. This will create instability in the atmosphere, bringing more rain and storms, mostly in the late afternoon. Winds will be minimal outside of the storms. Confidence: Medium to High

tomorrow night: The risk of rain and storms will continue through the evening but will subside after midnight. Nights will be muggy with lows in the 70s F. Confidence: Medium to High

Clouds decrease Saturday Rain will start in the morning, but will pick up again in the afternoon as a cold front from the north slowly moves towards us. This will bring more rain and storms in the afternoon and continue into the evening. It will remain uncomfortably hot and humid with temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s and lows in the upper 60s to mid 70s. Reliability: Medium to High

Hopefully the cold front will gather strength and bring a little drier air into the region. SundayHigh temperatures are still expected to reach the upper 80s to low 90s. A few scattered storms can be ruled out, but most of the activity will be concentrated in the east and south. Overnight lows will drop into the mid 60s to low 70s. Confidence: Moderate

Monday Humidity will be moderate, with highs again in the upper 80s to low 90s under fairly sunny skies, making for a tolerable start to the new week. Confidence Level: Medium
