UK Election 2024 live updates: As the UK election draws to a close, recent polls that have highlighted the possibility of a historic Labour victory have brought renewed attention to the role of pollsters.
UK General Election Live Updates: As of 9am, Keir Starmer’s Labour party had 282 seats, while Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives had just 53. 388 seats have been declared so far out of a total of 650. The Guardian reports that 326 seats are needed to secure a majority.
Britons headed to the polls in a parliamentary election that is expected to put Labour in power amid a struggling economy, growing distrust in institutions and a fraying social fabric. The Conservatives, in power since 2010, face a fed-up electorate more interested in pressing issues like the economy, infrastructure and the National Health Service than traditional party loyalty. Sunak voted in his Richmond constituency with his wife, as did Starmer, who has led the polls for months, and urged his supporters not to take victory for granted.

Who is Keir Starmer, the man predicted to win the UK election?
As the UK heads to a general election on Thursday, July 4, all eyes are on Labour leader Keir Starmer, who is expected to win a landslide victory and become the first Labour prime minister to take power since 2010. He will be facing off against Chancellor Rishi Sunak, who is struggling to keep the Conservatives in power despite voter exhaustion after 14 years of Conservative rule.
Starmer has served as Leader of the Opposition in the UK Parliament for the past four years, primarily steering the Social Democrats from the left towards the political centre. He is credited with reviving the Labour Party after its worst election defeat since the 1930s. Starmer, who entered Parliament just 10 years ago, not only made the party electable but also led it to the centre on key policies by delivering scathing criticism of the mistakes of three Conservative prime ministers, The New York Times reported. read more
