KARACHI (Pakistan), July 5 (Bernama Anadolu Agency) – Pakistan will provide scholarships to Palestinian medical students from the war-torn Gaza Strip to continue their education in the country, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported on Thursday citing a statement from Pakistan’s foreign ministry.
The decision was taken by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), the country’s medical education regulator, on the directives of Foreign Minister Mohammed Ishaq Dar, foreign ministry spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Barosh said at a weekly press conference in the capital, Islamabad.
“This decision will enable Gazan students to complete their medical education in Pakistan in the fields of cardiology, orthopedics, oncology, pediatrics and surgery, addressing a critical need in Gaza’s healthcare system,” Baloch said.
She added that 20 to 30 Palestinian students from the Gaza Strip are expected to enroll in medical universities in Pakistan soon.
He, however, did not say how many students would be admitted to Pakistan’s medical colleges.
Al Khidmat Foundation, one of the country’s largest relief organizations, and Islamabad’s International Rafah University will offer scholarships to 100 medical students from Gaza to continue their education in Pakistan.
The foundation and the university signed an agreement with the Palestinian Embassy in Islamabad last month.
Al-Khidmat Foundation is already working with Turkish and Egyptian relief agencies in Egypt and Gaza.
