A big Virginia Tech player will be named tomorrow. Major Preston, a 2025 cornerback who plays at IMG Academy in Florida, is scheduled to announce his college commitment tomorrow night. Virginia Tech has hopes of landing the 2025 player, but the 247Sports Crystal Ball is leaning toward Ole Miss for now.
Ole Miss insider David Johnson went on record today predicting that the Rebels will land the talented cornerback. While crystal ball predictions aren’t always accurate, they may provide a clue as to where this recruiting is headed. Preston is a three-star prospect rated 623rd nationally, 56th among cornerbacks and 87th in the state of Florida by the 247Sports Composite. He holds offers from Virginia Tech, Ole Miss, Florida, Colorado, Boston College, Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M, among others.
Here are some additional stats and information on Preston from 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins:
“A multi-sport athlete who played track and basketball as a freshman at Hopewell (Va.). Recorded times of 19.23 seconds in the 110m, 59.90 seconds in the 400m and 19-10.5 seconds in the LJ.”
2023: Played as both a cornerback and a saver at IMG Academy, which participated in the national championship game. Totaled six tackles against Lipscomb Academy, five tackles against Ben Davis, five tackles against Glenville, and two tackles against St. Joseph’s Prep. 2022: Spends his sophomore season at Virginia. A two-way player at Hopewell. Recorded 17 tackles, five interceptions, and four passbacks on defense and 29 catches for 449 yards and a TD on offense, according to MaxPreps. Received Richmond Times-Dispatch All-Metro Honorable Mention on defense.
Last week, Virginia Tech made its biggest move of the summer by signing four-star athlete Matthew Auten.
Outten is currently the highest-rated recruit in Virginia Tech’s Class of 2025, ranked 139th in the country, the fifth athlete in the country and the sixth player in the state of Virginia, according to 247Sports.

“I also competed in track and field. I qualified for the state meet in the 100 and 200 meter dashes as a sophomore. My best times are 6.49 in the 55, 10.91 in the 100, 22.45 in the 200, 43-4 in the TJ and 5-6 in the HJ.”
2023: A three-phase playmaker as a junior at Norcom, he got snaps at WR and DB while also functioning as the team’s primary returner. In six games, he caught 22 passes for 480 yards and six TDs, per MaxPreps. He also recorded 22 tackles, a PRTD and a blocked punt on defense.
