CARSON, Calif. (KABC) — Dozens of minors were taken into custody after a trash can was set on fire and fireworks were set off inside a shopping mall in Carson on Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office.
Police were dispatched to South Bay Pavilion Mall on Avalon Boulevard around 2:30 p.m. on reports of a “large disturbance” involving about 200 minors.
The Carson Sheriff’s Department said someone set a trash can on fire and illegal fireworks were set off inside the store, and investigators said 60 to 70 minors were taken into custody for refusing to disperse.
“Officers have detained multiple minors who have been issued summonses in connection to the incident and will be required to appear in court at a later date,” Carson Sheriff’s Station X’s post read.
Video from the scene showed minors lined up in the parking lot, several of them in handcuffs.
The sheriff’s office said no arrests were made.
The juveniles who were detained have since been released to their parents or guardians.
“Criminal activity like this disrupts our business and harms our community and will not be tolerated,” X’s post continued. “We want to thank members of the local community who immediately contacted law enforcement, as well as our customers and law enforcement partners for the cooperation and support they have shown.”
Investigators said no thefts were reported and no one was injured.
