Pakistan only needs fit, strong and strong players: Jason Gillespie’s mantra

New Delhi,Updated: July 8, 2024 11:49 IST

New Pakistan national team head coach Jason Gillespie has emphasised the importance of fitness to the team. He made it clear that there will be no compromise on the fitness of his players and they need to prove what value they can bring to the national team. The former Australian fast bowler arrived in Pakistan to hold a press conference ahead of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, which begins on August 21 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The second Test will be played at the National Stadium, Karachi on August 30.

The Pakistan team has come under a lot of criticism for their recent performances on the international stage. There have been frequent changes in the team leadership and questions have also been raised about the fitness level of certain players within the squad. Babar Azam’s side also suffered an early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024.

Gillespie’s focus on fitness

Gillespie wanted Pakistan’s players to improve their fitness levels, which he said was a key factor in playing modern cricket. He said he wanted his team to play positive cricket but not follow a “buzzball” approach.

“The national team is not the place to question a player’s worth. If there is any perception about his position, he must change it with his performance and attitude,” he told reporters.

“My belief is that only fit, strong and powerful players should be in the Test team because fitness is a must in modern cricket in any format.”

“For me, Test cricket is always about playing session by session and taking the opportunity when it comes. The match depends on the opponent and the circumstances.”

Pakistan prepares for challenge from Bangladesh

Gillespie acknowledged that Pakistan has a talented team but they need consistency to deliver results.

“I want Pakistan to play in the true Pakistani style and establish their own identity. I know they have good talent, it’s just a matter of polishing the players together so that they can perform well on a consistent basis.”

Gillispie said he accepted the head coaching position because he has always found Pakistan cricket to be a very exciting and challenging sport.

“Both myself and Gary (Kirsten) are really excited about the role. I’ve had a conversation with him and obviously we can help each other achieve our goals in red and white ball cricket.”

Captain Shan Masood’s side lost the three-match Test series against Pakistan and have since suffered defeats and upsets in the white-ball format. Captain Shan Masood will be looking to secure his first win as Pakistan’s Test captain when Pakistan takes on Bangladesh.
