The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has removed Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq from the senior national selection committee.
The decision comes after Pakistan’s disappointing performances at the T20 World Cups held in the West Indies and the United States. Pakistan finished third in a group topped by India and hosts the United States. Babar Azam’s team suffered a shock defeat to the US in the Super Over and was also beaten by India.
While Razzaq served on both the men’s and women’s national team selection committees, Wahab served as the men’s selection chairman until he was demoted to a member of the seven-member committee a few months ago. During this time, the committees were without a selection chairman.
“Pakistan has further confirmed the restructuring of its selection committee and details of its composition will be announced shortly,” a statement from the International Cricket Council (ICC) said.
Wahab, who played in three World Cups for Pakistan, also served as senior team manager during the recent T20 World Cup tour of the Americas. Since 2020, the PCB has had six notable selectors – Wahab, Mohammed Wasim, Shahid Afridi, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Haroon Rashid and Misbah-ul-Haq – for various and short-lived terms.
The remaining five selection committee members in their current configuration are head coaches (Gary Kisten for ODIs and T20Is and Jason Gillespie for Tests), captains Babar Azam, Mohammed Yousuf and Asad Shafiq and data analyst Bilal Afzal.
Pakistan are next due to host Bangladesh for two Test matches in August and England for three Test matches before embarking on a limited-overs tour of Australia, Zimbabwe and South Africa later this year.
