Missy Granger owned two businesses in Ruidoso: Z’s Bud Board and Z’s Bud Board’s Smoke Shop. Both of her stores were located at 200 Mechem Drive. “It’s hard to ask for help,” Granger said. “… You don’t realize. You don’t realize how proud you are until you need it. It’s hard to swallow that pride.” IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD: Local news from KOAT Action 7 News Granger and her family initially planned to help Ruidoso fire victims by collecting donations to give to those in need, but the flooding destroyed Granger’s business and now she’s asking tough questions. “They know this is a mountain, they know there’s going to be fires,” Granger said. “What have they done to prepare for this?” The building that housed Granger’s business stood tall for 70 years before being washed away by the flood, and now Granger’s insurance company won’t offer her any help. “I figured because I owe $6,000 in insurance, my insurance company would cover it the right way,” Granger said. Ruidoso, New Mexico —

Missy Granger owns two businesses in Ruidoso, “Z’s Bud Board” and “Z’s Bud Board’s Smoke Shop,” both located at 200 Mechem Drive.

“It’s hard to ask for help,” Granger said, “because… you don’t realize. You don’t realize how prideful you are until you need help. And that pride is hard to swallow.”

Granger and her family initially planned to help Ruidoso fire victims by collecting donations and giving to those in need, but the flooding has destroyed Granger’s business and she’s now asking tough questions.

“They know this is a mountain, they know there will be fires,” Granger said. “What have they done to prepare for this?”

The building that housed Granger’s business stood for 70 years before being washed away in a flood, and now Granger’s insurance company won’t provide her with any assistance.

“I thought because I was paying $6,000 for insurance I should be properly covered,” Granger said.

The explanation given to Granger is that she does not have flood insurance, but her dispute with the insurance company is that the flood was the result of a fire.

“To be honest, the flood would not have happened. [without the nearby wildfires,]” Granger said.

Either way, her family is left to deal with the aftermath, and while there may be a long road to recovery ahead, she says all she needs is a little help and time.

The Village of Ruidoso Emergency Management Agency has set up a website to collect photos of the damage in the area.
