  • The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks as the suspect in the shooting at the Trump rally.
  • The shooting happened Saturday night during a rally for President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.
  • Trump was escorted to a secure location. He posted to Truth Social that the bullet struck him above the ear.

The FBI has released the name of the suspect in a shooting that took place at a rally for former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania on Saturday night.

A police representative confirmed to Business Insider early Sunday morning that the suspect is Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

The FBI added that the shooting investigation remains ongoing and that it is asking for tips from witnesses or anyone with information.

The tip website is www.FBI.gov/Butler.

According to Federal Election Commission records, someone with the same name and area code as the suspect donated $15 to the Progressive Turnout Project through ActBlue, a fundraising platform for political candidates, in January 2021. It was not immediately clear whether the donor and the suspect are the same person.

The Associated Press and CNN reported that Pennsylvania state records showed the suspect was registered as a Republican voter.

A student with the same name graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022 and received the $500 National Math and Science Initiative STAR Award, western Pennsylvania news outlet TribLive reported at the time.

Gunfire rang out during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, prompting Trump to be escorted off the stage. A suspected gunman was taken into custody. One rally attendee was killed and two seriously injured.

Secret Service agents were filmed rushing onto the stage and helping Trump, who was seen with blood visible on his face, particularly around his ear. Trump later posted to Truth Social that he had been shot in the upper ear.

The Secret Service said Saturday that former President Trump was safe. He is believed to have arrived in New Jersey just after midnight surrounded by heavily armed guards and Secret Service agents.
