Last month, the body of a young man who reportedly took his own life by jumping into the Chenab river in Jammu was found in Pakistan, following which his family sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention to bring back the body for the last rites.
Harash Nagotra, a resident of a border village in Akhnoor district, went missing on June 11 and his motorcycle was found on the river bank.
A missing person report was filed by Nagotra’s family the following day, police officials said.
Officials said preliminary investigations suggested that she may have committed suicide by jumping into the river after losing over Rs 8 lakh in an online gaming app.
The family confirmed Nagotra’s death through a WhatsApp message from a Pakistani official after his parents, who work for a private telecommunications company, reactivated their son’s SIM card.
Nagotra’s father, Subhash Sharma, said he was informed by a WhatsApp message from a Pakistani official claiming to be from the autopsy department that the body had been found in a canal in Sialkot, Punjab province, on June 13.
Officials informed the deceased’s father that the body had been buried and also sent Nagorta’s identity card to the grieving family through WhatsApp, confirming that the body found in Sialkot was that of their missing son.
“We request the chief minister to help us recover our son’s body for the last rites. We want to perform his last rites as per our religion,” Sharma said.
Amrit Bhushan, a relative of Nagotra, said he has already written to the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs and the Prime Minister’s Office in this regard.
“We are in shock and grief and are seeking the return of the body. We have also requested the Pakistani authorities to hand over the body,” Bhushan added.
