* High temperature warning 11am to 8pm*

Today’s Daily Chart

It’s a somewhat subjective rating of the weather for that day on a scale of 0 to 10.

1/10: It’s blazingly hot. I thought about setting it to 0, but I’m feeling generous.

Quick Forecast

  • today: Extremely hot. Afternoon storms possible. Highs: 97 to 103.
  • tonight: Partly cloudy and muggy. Low: 74 to 81.
  • tomorrow: Extremely hot weather continues. Highs: 97-103.

Detailed forecast

After reaching 101 degrees on Sunday, we could see the four hottest days since at least 2016 and possibly 2012. Highs could reach triple digits over the next three days. Factoring in humidity, it could feel 5 to 10 degrees warmer.

This is severe and dangerous heat, especially for vulnerable populations like the homeless, elderly, and outdoor workers. Find ways to stay cool, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Fortunately, the heat wave should subside by Thursday.

Today (Monday): If your work is more than a few minutes’ walk away, you may need to shower before you arrive. The heat will be felt earlier in the day, peaking in the mid-to-late afternoon. Highs will be in the upper 90s to low 100s, tackling record highs of 100°F at Reagan National Airport, 98°F at Dulles Airport, and 102°F at Baltimore-Washington-Wizards International Airport-Marshall. Factoring in humidity (dew point near 70°F), it will feel like 105°F to 110°F. As with Sunday, there will be a few wind gusts, but most people should stay dry. Light winds 5-10 mph out of the west and southwest won’t provide much relief. Reliability: Medium to High

tonight: Mostly cloudy and muggy. Temperatures will stay in the 90s late at night near downtown, with lows settling into the 80s. In cooler areas, lows will be near 75. Reliability: Medium to High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): Similar to today, but with less chance of showers and storms. Highs will again reach the upper 90s to low 100s F, with a high temperature index of 105 to 110. The highest recorded temperature of 104 F (in 1988) at three airports is a bit of a stretch, but not impossible. Reliability: Medium to High

tomorrow night: It will be another uncomfortably muggy night tonight. Lows will likely be in the 80s downtown and in the 70s elsewhere. As the front approaches, there is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms later in the evening. Confidence: Medium to high

Future outlook

There is one more chance to celebrate the 100th anniversary. WednesdayHigh temperatures will reach a high of around 105 degrees, but a cold front will move into the region. Showers and storms will be frequent and some severe in the afternoon and evening as the cold front collides with the muggy air. Showers and storms will die down after sunset, with overnight lows in the 70s F. Reliability: Medium to High

upon ThursdayThe cold front is shifting southward, but close enough that forecasters are reporting a chance of rain and storms for parts of the south and east, especially in the afternoon and evening. Temperatures won’t be too warm, with highs in the mid to upper 80s F. After an evening storm, Thursday night will be mostly cloudy with lows in the 70s to 75s F. Confidence: Moderate

Friday This will be the nicest weather this week. Partly sunny, with moderate humidity and highs in the mid to upper 80s F. Partly cloudy at night with lows in the 65 to 70s in cooler areas and 70 to 75 in downtown. Confidence: Medium

The front that stalled in the south on Thursday and Friday SaturdayThe front will move north of the region, bringing clouds, rain and storms to areas south and east of Washington. Sunday, Temperatures and humidity will increase. Highs on Saturday will likely be in the 80s and may even reach the 90s on Sunday. Lows will be in the 70s. Reliability: Moderate

Snow potential index

Each day, we rate the chances of at least an inch of snowfall over the next week on a scale of 0 to 10.
