FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The wait is almost over.

After an 11-year hiatus, college football fans will finally be able to play as their favorite teams in the revamped and highly anticipated video game, EA Sports College Football 25.

The official release date is set for Friday, July 15, but those who bought the “Deluxe” version or have an EA Play membership could pick up the game as early as Monday.

This year’s cover features Texas QB Quinn Ewers, Colorado WR/CB Travis Hunter and Michigan RB Donovan Edwards with the Cotton Bowl as a backdrop.

Fresno State football players have expressed a desire to see themselves play for the first time for months.

In June, Cowboys WR and former Bulldogs WR Jalen Moreno-Clopper told Action News he was looking forward to playing as Fresno State’s preseason All-MW senior RB Malik Sherrod.

How did we get here?

In 2013, EA Sports was forced to stop releasing college football video games following the Keller v. Electronic Arts Inc. lawsuit.

The court ruled that players’ likenesses cannot be used in video games without compensation.

Now in 2021, everything has changed.

In June of that year, the Supreme Court upheld a district court ruling that NCAA rules limiting education-related compensation violated Section 1 of the Sherman Act, an antitrust law that banned monopolistic business practices.

The NCAA then voted to allow student-athletes to receive compensation in exchange for their name, image and likeness (NIL).

EA Sports College Football 25 will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox (X Series and S Series).
