Summer may not be here in the UK just yet, but you don’t need blue skies and sunshine to bring some joy into your home – try some whimsical decorating trends instead. Here’s a look at them:
What is whimsical decor?
As you might imagine, whimsical decor is all about playful spaces full of color and personality: botanical prints, quirky vintage furniture, bold lighting, and of course, lots of charming accessories. Fueled by the dopamine decor trend, this feel-good design style is sure to bring a sense of well-being to your home.
The trend also emphasises experimentation and fun: Laura Ashley’s head of design Helen Ashmore describes it as a way to “capture the essence of nostalgia and charm”, while Sue Jones, co-founder and creative director of furniture company OKA, sees it as “an open invitation to curate your interiors in a way that speaks to your personality”, choosing “things that make you smile, not just because they ‘fit’ with the rest of the space”.
How to improve your appearance
Whether you start small with patterned cushions and an accent wall, or jump straight into unique furniture, the possibilities for whimsical decor are endless.
Interior designer Laura Gonzalez (known as the Queen of Color) “Carefully selected vintage furniture and artisanal décor” creates a “cozy, nostalgic atmosphere,” as seen in her recent project at Hotel Byblos in Saint-Tropez.
Mismatched pieces and unusual antiques are also key to creating a whimsical feel, and Jamie and Lou Graham, owners of home goods retailer Graham & Greene, recommend adding “personal trinkets, quirky finishes and decorative pieces such as animal ornaments.”
