White Sox list Martin Maldonado for sale: Article published by NBC Sports Chicago
The White Sox have designated Martin Maldonado for designation, The Athletic reported Wednesday.
In addition to Maldonado, the White Sox announced Wednesday they also designated infielder Danny Mendick for assignment and optioned infielder Lenin Sosa, clearing the way for new signing Nick Senzel.
The 37-year-old Maldonado signed with the White Sox in January. He’s sharing catching duties with youngster Corey Lee, who is arguably having a much better season than the veteran Maldonado.
At the plate, Maldonado is batting .119 with four home runs and 11 RBIs, allowing just 16 hits and eight walks in 147 at-bats in 48 games this season, while Lee is batting .218 with a .612 OPS, eight home runs and 24 RBIs this season.
Lee is also a better catcher than Maldonado, and is one of the best in the league at getting runners out trying to steal bases. His framing and blocking are excellent, but he has room to improve.
Maldonado’s DFA move is long overdue, and the White Sox appear to be cutting payroll as the MLB trade deadline approaches.
