The British Open kicks off at Royal Troon.
The final major championship of the year got underway Thursday morning in Scotland, where cold, windy and wet conditions are expected throughout the week. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the overwhelming favorite to win, but there are plenty of other players who could have a shot at the Claret Jug on Sunday afternoon, including Justin Thomas, who hasn’t won since winning the 2022 PGA Championship, but shot a 3-under 68 to take the clubhouse lead.
Tiger Woods, who made his return this week after struggling at last month’s U.S. Open and forcefully refuted calls for him to retire upon arriving in Britain, will tee off in the afternoon at 9:37 a.m. ET alongside Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay.
McIlroy, who fell in the rankings late in the U.S. Open and hasn’t won a major tournament in a decade, will play alongside Max Homa and Tyrrell Hatton in the morning session at 5:09 a.m. ET. Reigning U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau is scheduled to start just before McIlroy.

DeChambeau is still Britain’s
Bryson DeChambeau’s quest for consecutive major championships looks elusive. After shooting 42 over the first nine holes, he bogeyed five straight holes in the second, leaving the U.S. Open champion already six over par.
This isn’t too surprising, since the British Open has never been Bryson’s cup of tea: In his six tournaments, he’s finished in the top 10 once (tied for eighth in 2022), missed the cut twice and finished tied for 60th last year.

McIlroy is already out of contention
How will Rory McIlroy react after his heartbreaking loss at the U.S. Open? Well, not very well.
After shooting 2-over 38 for the first nine holes, he bogeyed the 10th hole and then hit an out-of-bounds shot for a double bogey on the 11th hole to finish 5-over and eight strokes behind Justin Thomas.
